Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson is ready to back caretaker manager Steve Agnew.

He has no plans to approach Nigel Pearson or Steve McClaren to replace Aitor Karanka.

After defeat to Manchester United, Gibson insists that he hopes Agnew will still be in the hotseat this time next year.

When quizzed by BT Sport on whether he planned to contact Pearson or McClaren, the popular owner said: “No – we are going with Steve Agnew.

“He has years of experience, I trust him, he’s a man of integrity and the players at this football club respect, trust and like him.”
