⚽ Middlesbrough chairman Gibson tribute to Karanka: Tremendous for this football club ⚽

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson insists the club is grateful to sacked manager Aitor Karanka.

After defeat to Manchester United, Gibson spoke about the decision to part company with Karanka – but he hailed the Spaniard’s achievements during his three-and-a-half-year reign.

Gibson said: “Aitor has been tremendous for this football club, he’s worked very hard for three and a half years.

“This is a tough business and at end of last season everyone was under pressure trying to get up.

“We had a tough summer trying to get players in so since (last) season ended, Aitor hasn’t stopped – and we agreed mutually it was the time for him to leave.

“He handled it with great dignity, he’s a great guy and will be well-missed here. He’s part of our history and achieved something very difficult – and it’s getting more difficult to get out of the Championship and into the Premier League.”

Gibson continued: “Aitor put the interests of the club first. One thing I know is how hard Aitor worked at this club, he’s a tremendous guy and will go on to better things.

“We’re better because of him, I hope he’s better because of us, and we’ll stay friends, our family will stay friends, we’ll meet and have a beer and some dinner. He’ll always be my friend.”
